Reliastar II

Reliastar II
Reliastar II, lower loop, Minneapolis

In the building boom of the early 1980s, Reliastar commissioned another building by Minoru Yamasaki. The lobby of this building is much smaller than the rest of the building. This feature caused the outside of the building to stop about 30 from the ground. There's open space between the outside wall supporting colums. This makes the building look like a big, white electrical component that's been only half plugged into the block on which it sits.

This building's space has been invaded by our spider-like skyway system. The skyway runs under the overhang, but still about 20 feet or so above ground. I'm not even sure it attaches to the skyway. It looks weird, because it is.
