This building was designed by architect Leroy S. Buffington in the late 1880's.

The bricks on this building are of an unusual size. Instead of being the usual brick size, they're about half the height. This seems to give the building a more horizontal feeling and really makes the purplish stone around the windows really stand out. The stone around the windows was left rusticated and some of it is now severely warn through water damage. This is especially true of the sills of the ground level windows.

I'm waiting on approval from the Minnesota Historical Society to show a picture of this building shortly after it was built. The particular image I want for this page shows the contrast between the building's exterior surfaces and colors. Of course, black and white film and the lenses of the time really tend to exaggerate the differences, but the picture is also really nice because there are no trees obstructing the view of the building.
