Dining Cars

What are they? Were they railroad cars that were plucked off the rails and made into diners? Were they chrome plated UFO's that came to earth and have been feeding us for all these years? What's with the fluted chrome? Why are these places almost always greasy spoons? Why do I feel so good just seeing one? So many questions...

To my knowledge, there's only one dining car here in the Twin Cities. That would be Mickey's and I'll try to get a photo of them in here quickly. Here are some other ones I've seen on the road.

I was just passing this one by.
Closed and falling apart, sad.
This one was closed, but I love the teal coloring.

This one was even more closed, but I snapped the photo in passing. I think this one and the other one were somewhere in Connecticut.
Even closed, these things still shine in the sun.
It's probably long gone as these pictures were taken about 10 years ago.

It's funny, but I remember the "EAT" sign being much taller. The sign said "EAT" as if I needed any reminding. It made sense. Eat. EAT. OK, I'll eat. We need more signs like this.
EAT Oh, yeah. OK.
This dining car was just off the interstate that runs North/South through the Eastern part of Connecticut. They served a mean biscuits and gravy. It was cheap, too. I hope it's still open.
